As an operator, wheel loader safety should be your top concern

A wheel loader, also known as a front-end loader, is a useful piece of heavy equipment at the job site. It is widely used in the construction industry for a wide range of applications.

However, wheel loaders can also be the cause of major safety concerns if operators do not operate them properly.

So, here are some tips for wheel loader safety at the job site.

Wheel Loader Safety Hazards

As an operator, wheel loader safety should be among your top concerns. Improper operation of wheel loaders can pose hazards to the operators and other workers on sites such as:

Getting caught in the pinch points of the bucket arms or the pivot area

Collision

Running over a pedestrian

Spilling loads

Machine upset

Falling over an edge

Rider falling off

Operator falling when mounting or dismounting the equipment

Mechanical failure

Raised bucket falling

Wheel Loader Safety Tips at the Job Site

Carefully back up

Even though most wheel loaders come with a backup alarm, you should still be extra cautious when backing up.

As such, you should never reverse your wheel loader without looking behind you.

Many accidents happen when the operators fail to check their surroundings before backing up. The easiest way to check for your surroundings is to use the rear-view mirror, and if the lighting is poor, use both front and rear lights.

Strictly no passenger

Other than the operator, no one should ride on the wheel loader.

The usual bouncing and jarring due to uneven surfaces can cause the passenger to be thrown off the equipment. This risks the passenger being run over.

Moreover, wheel loaders are designed with a Rollover Protective Structure (ROPS) that protects the operator in the case of a rollover.

The operator must be in the cab with the seatbelt on for this system to work. Hence, the rider outside the cab will not be protected should there be an accident.

Extreme caution in pivot areas

If your wheel loaders are articulated, you should always check the pivot area to ensure no one is in the area. This area is extremely dangerous with its nasty pinch point.

Before working within this area, install safety bars or links. They can protect preventing the machine from turning, which can crush you.

Overhead Hazards

Be extra careful when you are around, under, or between a raised bucket or the arms.

These areas are considered danger zones. If you have to be in these areas, make sure the machine is shut down. Additionally, have the bucket lowered to the ground unless for some reason you need it to be raised.

For extra precaution, you can install jaws or blocks under raised bucket arms so they cannot fall on you if something goes wrong.
